This pattern and many more patterns can be found in my Belfinyum: Crochet Patterns, available on through Etsy (PDF).

Project Level: This project isn’t too difficult, but it does use more concepts that a beginner may not be familiar with. This pattern is worked in joined rounds, and uses color changes and sewing. It also uses a magic circle, but it can be replaced with chaining 2 and single crocheting into the 2nd chain from the hook.

Stitches:

Magic circle (mc)

Chain (ch)

Single crochet (sc)

Slip stitch (sl st)

Single crochet increase (inc)

Single crochet decrease (sc2tog, dec)

Materials:

Scrap yarn blue, white, and black

– Weight: Medium (4)

– Fiber: 100% acrylic

– Approximate total length: 50 yd / 46 m

– Approximate total weight: 25 g

5.0 mm Aluminum Crochet Hook Darning/Tapestry/Yarn Needle Scissors

Gauge: 18 sc – 20 rows = 4 in / 10 cm

Dimensions: 2.5 inches in diameter x 3.5 inches long or 6 cm in diameter x 9 cm long

Tips:

– Tighten your slip stitches to make the seam smaller and less visible

– The chain 1 at the beginning of each round does NOT count as a single crochet

– If you’re having trouble with the magic circle, consider making a slip knot, chaining 2, then doing 6 single crochets into the 2nd chain from the hook

– Pull your loose ends to the inside of the bee (where no one will be able to see!) Thanks for watching!

If you have never crocheted before, NO PROBLEM. Everyone has to start somewhere. When I first started, it took me a week just to figure out how to make a ball. It took even longer to get my fingers and hands used to holding a crochet hook. Crocheting can be frustrating at first but like with all things new, your body will develop muscle memory and over time, you will find that it will get easier. Always remember that nothing is hard, only new. There is no right way or wrong way to crochet. Whatever works for you, your body, and your ability is the right way. Some people will hold a crochet hook like a pen, I prefer to hold it like a knife, with my index finger along the length of the hook. This is purely personal preference. Crochet is an art form and like all art forms, is open to personal interpretation. Crochet patterns function as guidelines only, and I encourage you to bring your own artistic flair to each pattern. Do not be afraid to use different hooks or types of yarn. Experiment by changing the colors. Add accessories, modify the body shape, and bring your own individual spice to each pattern. Sometimes it will work; most of the time, it will not, and that is perfectly fine because in the end, you will end up with something that is yours. Something that you created. Your own cute Bumblebee.
