This class will be presented to show the student how to apply mokume gane techniques to glass beads to make beautiful designs.  The class is intended for the beginning student and does not require a lot of experience or expensive tools and materials.  The class will start with an introduction and a presentation slide of the class Syllabus.  We will then review the prerequisites including having knowledge of basic lampwork safety requirements, a well ventilated, work area and a pair of didymium safety glasses.  It is also recommended that the student has a kiln to properly anneal their finished beads.

The class will start with an Introduction and Syllabus.  A short presentation of the prerequisites will then occur.

The first lecture will discuss bead preparation using commercial glass stringers.  A base bead will be formed, and different colors of glass stringer will be applied over the base bead to make layers of color.  The bead will then be annealed in the kiln for durability. After annealing and cooling, the instructor will demonstrate how to use a Dremel grinding tool to grind fish-eye designs into the glass bead. Attention will be paid to the angle of the tool in order to achieve the look.

The second lecture will begin with bead preparation using enamel powders. Several different layers of enamel color will be used to achieve the layered look.  After the powders are applied, the bead will be annealed in the kiln.  Once the bead is cooled and cleaned, the instructor will show the students how to create a star mokume gane design on the bead. She will then demonstrate how to fire polish the bead using the kiln and the lampwork torch.

A congratulatory wrap up will conclude the class.
