What you’ll learn
- Your aim: STYLE! Aim for style, confidence and natural ability in English. Clear accent, correct intonation.
- My aim: to help you to understand the grammar, and remember it, and to improve your pronunciation.
- Copy me, laugh with me, and your accent will improve. Lots of examples for you to analyse and evaluate.
- Apply the rules to your own situation – be it work, school, or just friendly chat with friends.
- Use the knowledge in exams to gain better grades.
- Aim to use the new structures in informal writing too.
- Sound much more natural, more like a native speaker of English.
TAG QUESTIONS have QUESTION TAGS. So what is a tag? How does it work? How does intonation change the meaning? Can you accidentally say the opposite of what you mean?
Well, yes, you can accidentally say the opposite of what you mean! It is essential to get the intonation correct. So this is a study of tag questions – a special way of asking questions. Tag questions are not always questions! Sometimes they are more statement than question – but this what we need to analyse, evaluate, and understand. Only then can we create natural speaking skills.
Real English, is it? Yes, it is, isn’t it! Examples: Nice idea, innit! Yep, ain’t it! Shan’t study it, shall we? Understand me, do yer? Hello! Anybody there, is there?
Some are easy and found in any grammar book. Some are not in the grammar books, and are difficult to understand.
But YOU will understand it, won’t you! (after you’ve done this course!)
The focus is on SPEAKING, INTONATION and PRONUNCIATION. Yep, sure is, ain’t it! But you can use the expressions in writing too – informal writing. And, of course, you’ll see these tags in books, and hear them in films and on the TV.
We boldly go where no grammar book dare go! (Star Trek fans will recognise this!) You’ll build your PRONUNCIATION and INTONATION skills as we study the GRAMMAR. We’ll discover question tags you never knew existed. You’ll study punctuation, ellipsis, and regional variations. We’ll look at some really bad English and slang – it will help you understand native-English speakers in informal conversation.
And it’s all jolly good fun.
The course is NOT suitable for beginners.
Designed for Intermediate students and above (B1 and above). Very advanced students can use the simpler parts as revision, and then focus on the more difficult areas. There are plenty of problematic topics to examine.
So, let’s start, shall we?
