Carboxylic acids are organic acids that have found their way into our homes and daily lives. One example is “acetic acid”, which comes from the Latin word “acetum”, meaning vinegar. In this course, we discuss carboxylic acids, carbonyl compounds(aldehydes and ketones) and the tool used to identify them, infrared spectroscopy. You’ll discover their naming, preparation processes, and reactions to various substances.

  • Summarise carboxylic acid derivatives
  • Explain various infrared spectrum peaks
  • Describe the most significant regions
  • Distinguish between hydroxyl (O?H) and amine (N?H) by looking at the broadening and range of a band
  • Carbonyl Compounds: Aldehydes and Ketones

This module covers carbonyl compounds: aldehydes and ketones, their IUPAC and common names, preparation and reactions. You’ll learn about their naming by replacing the “-e” with “-al” or “-one” and the differences between aldehydes and ketones. Then, you’ll discover how aldehydes and ketones undergo nucleophilic addition using hydrogen cyanide.

    Carboxylic Acids

In this module, you’ll study carboxylic acids, including their naming conventions and functional groups. You’ll explore their preparation and how they react with reactive metals, alkalis, and carbonates, forming salts. Discover the formation of carboxylic acid derivatives and their interactions with amines, phenols, and alcohols.

    Infrared Spectroscopy

This module discusses infrared spectroscopy, which aids in the identification of organic compounds by analysing their energy absorption. You’ll learn about the infrared spectrum and how to distinguish between hydroxyl (O?H) and amine (N?H), acetic acid and ethanol, and other compounds by looking at the broadening and range of a band.
