Join designer Bristol Ivy to knit a comfy cardigan, one week at a time. Make your fall wardrobe staple — and maybe a few friends — in just six weeks! Knit along with Bristol Ivy to create an easy-fitting sweater that you’ll love to wear every day. First download the the planning sheet and the exclusive pattern, then watch the first video tip from Bristol. Over the next five videos — which you can watch from week to week, or all at once if you’re feeling ambitious — she’ll share techniques and demos for lace, pockets, saddle shoulders, short rows and more. Whether it’s your first sweater or your fiftieth, this is one knit-along you don’t want to miss. Ready to get started? Let’s #SweaterTogether!
Week 1: Gauge Swatches & Getting Started
Swatching is the key to a properly fitting garment. In this first week, Bristol shows you how pocket linings also serve double-duty as gauge swatches. Discover the ins and outs of knitting lace as you work on a lace gauge swatch. Once you’ve got gauge, it’s time to cast on!
Week 2: Joining Pockets
This week you’ll focus on pockets for your cardigan. Find out how to split the body for pockets and knit in the linings. Then just keep knitting, and knit some more.
Week 3: Short Rows
Short rows add proper shaping to the left and right fronts as well as the back of your cardigan. Here, Bristol talks you through proper shaping for each piece, then demonstrates her preferred short row method: Japanese short rows.
Week 4: Shoulder Saddles
Once the main body of your cardigan is complete, it’s time to saddle up! Pick up stitches for the shoulder saddles, work the lace chart flat and get ready for sleeves.
Week 5: Sleeves
Don’t get stranded on sleeve island! Let Bristol guide you through working your sleeves, from picking up stitches and adjusting the length (if necessary) to binding off with a slip, slip, knit (SSK) bind-off.
Week 6: Finishing
Ready to complete your sweater? In this final week, you’ll pick up stitches for the neckband, whipstitch your pockets and give everything a proper blocking. If you’ve stuck to the game plan, you’ll be proudly wearing your finished cardigan in no time.
