Ready to dive deeper into watercolor painting? In the follow-up to “Startup Library: Painting with Watercolors,” artist Kateri Ewing helps you create three paintings that celebrate the natural world. With Kateri’s step-by-step guidance, you’ll build on your skills with advanced-beginner techniques such as atmospheric perspective, rendering form and more.

Getting Started

Begin as Kateri goes over the tools and materials you’ll need to get started, including brushes, palettes and paint.

Autumn Treasures: Botanical Studies From Natural Objects

Get started on your first project: a botanical study of a mushroom and acorns. Follow along with Kateri as she guides you step by step. You’ll see how to add details, textures and more.

The Landscape: Cornfield in Autumn

Start your second project: an atmospheric landscape of a cornfield in autumn. For this one, you’ll use an expanded palette. First practice your washes for the sky and background. Then add texture and fill in the foreground to create the illusion of depth.

Nature Study: Bluebird on a Flower Branch

Finally, complete your third and final project: a bluebird on a flowering branch. You’ll use the primary palette with the addition of burnt sienna.
