Bias Knitting Basics

Designer Bristol Ivy introduces you to bias knitting and the beautiful drape and fun shapes it can create. Learn about the simple geometry you’ll encounter, then cast on for your first project, the Simple Bias Cowl, which you’ll knit flat, then graft together with Bristol’s guidance.

Changing the Rate of Bias

Typically, bias knitting has increases and decreases on every right-side row, but you can vary this rate and thus the shape of your knitting, too! You’ll see how with your second project, the gently undulating Bias Ripple Scarf. Bristol also addresses how to avoid and fix mistakes in your work.

Biased Chevrons

By mirroring your bias knitting, you can create chic chevrons. With decreases at the edge of your work and increases at the center, you’ll create peaks. Reverse the order for valleys. Mix up your stitch count for off-center chevrons. Let your inner designer loose!

Combining Chevrons & Shifting Rates

Shaped Ends & Bias in the Round

You can square off your angled knitting by filling in the “imaginary triangles” on the edges. Create rectangles or fill in the ends of your chevrons this way. Bristol also gets you started with bias knitting in the round, showing how chevrons are perfect for circular knitting.

Striped Chevrons in the Round

Wrap your head around some tricky knitting to master the Origami Mitered Square Cowl. Start with a small, circular cast-on with double-pointed needles and expand into triangles of knitting that eventually become chevrons knit in the round. Sounds crazy, looks stunning!
