Perspective manipulation is an effective way to add three-dimensionality to a two-dimensional illustration. One discipline that particularly takes advantage of this is architecture, in which isometric perspective is used to represent buildings to scale in a two-dimensional drawing without having to resort to 3D software.

In this online course, learn to illustrate in isometric perspective and then animate your creations alongside Jorge Tortosa, co-founder, creative director, and motion designer at Modik studio. He teaches you how to create the digital campaign for an international conference on smart cities using 2D illustration and animation.

Start by getting to know your teacher, his work within Modik, and how he has evolved so far. He also tells you about some of his influences in the world of illustration and motion design.

Learn to illustrate in isometric perspective, starting with the letters that make up the phrase “Smart City” making them look like buildings in your smart city. Then familiarize yourself with Illustrator’s 3D Effect tool.

Using this same technique, construct buildings and child elements within your smart city, and complete the static version.

Now animate your smart city using After Effects. Do some basic animations from scratch that you then perfect gradually.
