Relief Engraving and Contemporary Printing
Learn manual engraving and printing techniques to create one-of-a kind spaces
A gouge is a thin, half-round cutting tool used by carpenters and other craftsmen to carve curved surfaces. This is the dictionary definition, but for Pablo Salvaje it is so much more than that. For him, a gouge is an extension of his own hand that has allowed him to create some of his best pieces and travel the world doing what he loves.
In this course, this versatile artist from Seville accompanies you in the process of creating an art installation using relief engraving and stamping to create a mural for the space of your choice.
Start by learning about Pablo’s career and his personal, professional, and social projects. Get to know his influences from both artists and nature.
Become familiar with setting up a workspace and using basic tools for relief engraving. Review the materials to be used in the course and learn about the basic concepts for working in relief, such as the rules of working with positive and negative relief surfaces.
After taking in some theory, it’s time to get down to work. Start by sketching your mural design using books, photographs, and sketches. Learn about composition, color palettes, and visual balance before passing your design to a stencil.
Using your carved design, first use it to print on paper and another fabric to discover the characteristic properties of other materials before making your mural.
