Embracing imperfections can open up a whole new world of creative possibilities. That’s the philosophy of illustrator and art director Robert Sammelin, a self-professed comic book superfan who has collaborated with the likes of Nike, The New York Times, Waxwork Records, and WIRED.

In this online course, Robert teaches you how to combine the controlled chaos of analog drawing with the limitless world of digital painting to illustrate a striking piece of cover art. Explore pencil and ink techniques, experiment with textures, and refine your image with post-processing in Photoshop. Bring old and new worlds together to take your drawings to the next level!

Begin the course by getting to know art director and illustrator Robert Sammelin. He tells you about his background, some of his biggest influences, and how joy and curiosity are the driving force behind his art.

Gather and analyze references for inspiration, then construct a basic composition, digitally sketch out some ideas, and plan the colors for your final project.

Robert teaches you a range of different penciling techniques, then how use a brush and nib to do ink washes. Next, get experimental as he shows you how to create various textures for the coloring stage.

Scan your image and prepare it for the digital coloring process in Photoshop. Color your characters and main elements, learn how to get an organic-looking finish, and add some textural details and adjustments.
