Getting Started
Meet Carl Hentsch and learn more about the inspiration behind this Amish-style quilt, as well as the techniques you’ll use to bring it to life. Carl will also give you tips for preparing your fabric before you begin cutting and piecing.
July: Center Medallion
Discover tools and techniques for foundation paper piecing the center medallion block for this Amish-inspired design. Carl will also give you tips for achieving sharp, precise points as you piece your medallion.
August: Circle Border
Take your skills even further as you use foundation piecing to create a colorful border comprised of circles. Along the way, you’ll see how to use templates for cutting uniform pieces accurately and efficiently, before you practice piecing curves.
September: Triangles & Squares
Enjoy some familiar techniques such as using half- and quarter-square triangles to make rows of on-point squares. As you piece, you’ll get tips for efficiently assembling accurate flying geese units, before creating Broadway Star blocks for cornerstones and assembling your squares-on-point border.
October: Appliqué Flower & Stems
Watch your next block bloom as you create and apply appliqué flowers. During this lesson, you’ll also see how to minimize stiffness in quilts when working with multiple layers of appliqué pieces.
November: Strip-Pieced Blocks
Use strip piecing to quickly create units for your large blocks. Carl will also show you how to use half-square triangle and square-in-a-square units to complement your strip-pieced units. By the end, you’ll have two traditional blocks that really bring the design together.
December: Basket of Lilies & Setting Triangles
In your final lesson, you’ll find out how to sew Y-seams as you assemble a Basket of Lilies block. Carl will also help you create setting triangles for log cabins and join your blocks for a finished quilt top!
