This free online course explores electrochemical devices that supply electrical current to an external circuit. We study electrical generators that convert stored chemical energy into electrical current and explain how supercapacitors support high energy density. We also cover the dynamics of electrically conductive fluids in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. This course suits anyone looking to save the planet while keeping it moving.

  • Fuel Cell: Concept and Design

In this module, you will be introduced to the different types of fuel cells, their advantages and disadvantages. You will learn about the reactions that occur in a fuel cell and the main by-products. You will study the oxidation and reduction process for each type of fuel cell. You will learn the methods in which the drop in the amount of carbon monoxide that is present in the fuel cell is enabled. You will study some of the challenges associated with the development of fuel cells.

    Fuel Cells: Operation and Assembly

In this module, you will be introduced to the characterization of the electrochemical device as they deteriorate depending on operating conditions or time. You will learn about test protocols that are used to intervene and diagnose a cell. Next, you will study the thermodynamic processes associated with electrochemical devices and how to evaluate the deterioration of the device’s performance. Finally, you will learn the process of disassembling and reassembling a fuel cell.

    Supercapacitors and the MHD Process

In this module, you will be introduced to the supercapacitors, the applications that they are suited for and the typical materials that are used for the supercapacitor. You will study the differences in capacitance over the life cycle of a supercapacitor. Next, you will learn about the flywheel, a device that allows you to store kinetic energy. Finally, you will study the Magnetohydrodynamic Power Generation process, its principle of operation and the challenges posed by this technology.
