Arabic for Church: Recognize and Pronounce (Intensive) is a course designed for Arabic-speaking Christians who have not had the chance to learn how to read in Arabic and would like to participate actively in Church. This fast-paced syllabus was designed by Lina Flowers, a native-speaker of Arabic, an English teacher and a Professional Development Trainer with a vast experience in curriculum design and writing training materials. This fast-paced course is a combination of two courses Recognize and Pronounce, through watching lectures and doing quizzes, a learner will be able to read any Arabic word they might come across.

The first part of the course is Arabic for Church: Recognize, where learners will learn to recognize Arabic letters in terms of shapes, consonant sounds and their influence on words when they come in the final position. To recognize what the Arabic letters look like, this course follows the order of the alphabet as its organization lends itself to learning letters by shape. Then to recognize Arabic consonant sounds, learners will listen to their instructor’s pronunciation, a native-speaker of Arabic, and be guided further by the use of the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) as a learning tool. With regards to how letters are linked in the final position, the course follows the writing guidelines of Al-Ruqa’a writing style for the elevation of letters above the line only, not the typeface. This will prove useful should learners decide to learn how to write in Arabic.

In Arabic for Church: Pronounce, learners will learn to pronounce Arabic letters and diacritics. The course starts by introducing consonant sounds that have English counterparts and gradually adds sounds that are less familiar to English speakers. The course clarifies the places and manners of articulation for each of the consonant sounds learnt and how that relates to the appropriate vowel sounds used with them. The course uses the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) to demonstrate changes among and relationships between elements of speech. In order to understand the relationships between sounds within a word, learners will learn Arabic letters, each in their three forms: initial, medial and final.

This intensive course consists of 29 sections. In each section, learners will be able to watch a lecture then self-evaluate using a quiz of 10 multiple-choice questions. The course uses extracts from a variety of sources; the Bible, prayer books and hymnals, selecting authentic texts that best achieve course objectives.
