I will guide you through the reasons for using CAD, how to setup the free version of QCAD, which common drawing shapes to use and how to modify and combine these shapes.

  1. Why CAD?Why should you use CAD? Why would you plan a garden in the first place? CAD has a steep learning curve but is the best choice for designing a garden. It can be free, very fast and portable.

  2. Setup QCADQCAD is my Free CAD software of choice but it can be fiddly to get the free version. I guide you through this setup, and show you how to modify your environment so that the default CAD colours look good in most situations.

  3. Shapes, entities, modsLearn the 4 basic shapes, 3 types of entity and 4 modifications. We’ll cover rectangles, circles, lines and the wondrous NURBS, then look at how these relate to polylines, blocks and text. Once you discover the power of modifying the basic shapes using offset, mirror, divide and rotate, you will be able to create aninfinity of garden design elements.

  4. ExamplesNot one buttwo walkthrough examples, showing you how to establish a CAD design, using a satellite photo as a background and CAD blocks to add plants. We’ll be looking at a 1 acre garden, and then a town garden.
