Children’s Illustration for Editorial Publications
Learn how to approach children’s illustration projects, from the brief to the final delivery
Drawing for the little ones and accompanying funny stories with colorful images is what Pamela Barbieri is most passionate about. Her six years of experience as an illustrator have provided her with in-depth knowledge of the children’s publishing market and her own infallible character creation method. Her clients include Jardín de Genios magazine, Éditions Auzou, Cottage Door Press, The Clever Factory, and Catapulta Editores, among many others.
In this course, learn how to illustrate a two-page spread for a children’s magazine like a professional, from the basic to the most complex details.
Get to know your teacher, Pamela Barbieri. She talks about her passion for children’s illustration and how she got started in the industry. She also shares her most important works and biggest influences.
Learn about the different target audiences in the children’s publishing market and try out some different illustration styles by designing a character, starting with the head and placing special emphasis on expressions. Once you’ve defined the face, create your character’s body using the puppet method.
Pamela then teaches you all the basic resources for producing illustrated stories such as lines, color palettes, and composition. Next, focus your attention on the brief—what it is, how it’s structured, and what its benefits are when it comes to illustration.
Now’s the moment of truth! Check your assignment and work on it as if it were a real commission. Begin by studying the brief and start brainstorming. Draw the first sketches until you have one that shows lots of potential, vectorize it in Adobe Illustrator, and add color after a few tests.
