In this module, Introduction to Management, students will get an introduction to management. Students will begin by learning what management is, from coordinating and organizing to the objectives of management. We then take a look at how to be an effective and efficient manager. Students will then learn what managers do, from meeting business goals and objectives to sharing responsibility.
Ethics and Social Responsibility
In this module, Ethics and Social Responsibility, students will learn about ethics and social responsibility in middle management. This module will cover business scandals and the standpoint of the general public toward those in positions of leadership. Students will learn about equal opportunity, no tolerance harassment policies, and how to converse respectfully.
Managing Information
In this module, Managing Information, students will learn about managing information. With technology making information readily available and more people accessing that information, it’s important to know how to manage it all. Keeping information organized and knowing how to acquire and maintain that information is key to a middle management position.
Decision-Making
In this module, Decision-Making, students will learn about decision-making. Once useful information is gathered, decisions need to be made based on that information and this module will guide students through that process. Truly effective managers are familiar with rational decision-making and are always seeking to improve their decision-making skills.
Control
In this module, Control, students will learn about control as a middle manager. Middle managers are responsible for controlling operations. Students will learn the difference between controlling operations and micromanaging. This module will then cover regulative control and normative control as well as the control process.
Organizational Strategy
In this module, Organizational Strategy, students will learn about organizational strategy. Students will learn about the sustainable competitive advantage, from customer service, products or services, reputation, brand, management, and employee loyalty. This module then covers the strategy-making process.
Innovation and Change
In this module, Innovation and Change, students will learn about innovation and change and how they relate to the middle manager. Students will cover organizational innovation in order to identify opportunities, determine the direction, brainstorm ideas, analyze ideas, and apply innovations. This module then covers the process for managing innovation.
Organizational Structures and Process
In this module, Organizational Structures and Process, students will learn about organizational structures and processes. Students will learn about departmentalization, organizational authority, job design, and designing organizational processes. By the end of this module, students will have a better grasp of organizational structures and processes.
Managing Teams
In this module, Managing Teams, students will learn about managing teams. Middle managers work not only for those above them, but also for those that work under them. Students will learn about the good and bad sides of using teams. This module then covers the kinds of teams; informal, traditional, problem-solving, leadership, and virtual.
Motivation and Leadership
In this module, Motivation and Leadership, students will learn about motivation and leadership. Students will learn about the basics of motivation, both external motivation and internal motivations. This module then covers the equity theory, that the work put in should equal the work that comes out.
