This course is an introduction to Tabla and Indian Classical rhythm intended for students of all skill and experience levels. We will be utilizing clapping patterns and vocalization. Syllables, called bols, which represent sounds produced by the tabla are spoken simultaneously with specific clapping patterns to introduce the student to the basics of Tabla and Taala, the rhythmic basis of all Indian Classical Music and Dance. This is a beginner level class and will serve as an entry point for various possible course paths. Those students interested in continuing on with the use of vocalization and clapping to learn more advanced material can take the “Decoding Tabla for Everyone” course. Those interested in learning tabla in earnest may take the “Study of Tabla” course. Those interested in learning to apply tabla rhythms and techniques to other percussion instruments may take “Translating Tabla To Drum Set”, “Translating Tabla to Cajon”, or “Translating Tabla to Multi Percussion.” Each of these course paths will cover beginner through more advanced level material. An “Introduction to Tabla for Everyone” and “Decoding Tabla for Everyone” are intended for literally everyone who has an interest in the subject, whether musician, dancer, singer, or listener. No instrument is necessary. No previous experience with music is necessary. There will be some musical notation presented but only as an aid to those students who are already able to read music.
