  • Describe the working principle of an air-conditioning system
  • Evaluate the use of psychrometric charts in managing the AC system
  • Describe the types of refrigerants used in a reefer system
  • Evaluate the management of oil return in a single and multi compressor systems
  • Discuss how oil contaminates a reefer system and its detrimental effects on plant performance
  • Ventilation Systems

In this module, you will be introduced to ventilation systems and the two types of ventilation controls, as well as the two types of sweat that can occur on a vessel. You will also be introduced to a typical ventilation engine room arrangement, as well as the components of an engine room ventilation system. The differences between fans, blowers and compressors, as well as the factors to consider when selecting a fan will also be highlighted in this module.

    Refrigerated Plants and Refrigerated Cargo

In this module, you will be introduced to the direct and indirect expansion system, vapour compression system, as well as the four components of the refrigeration cycle. You will also be introduced to cargo space cooling, container cooling, as well as the precautions for handling, loading and receiving cargo.

    Air Conditioning Systems and Compressors

In this module, you will be introduced to the working principle of an air conditioning system, the use of psychrometric charts in managing the AC system, as well as the comfort conditions to be maintained in an AC system. You will also be introduced to the reefer compressor used onboard a merchant’s vessel, the various component parts in a reciprocating reefer compressor, as well as the functional components of a reefer plant.

Safety and Handling Oil in A/C Systems

In this module, you will be introduced to the safety devices used to protect the operation of a reefer plant, types of leak tests, as well as single and multiple compressor systems. You will also be introduced to the key functions of oil in a reefer system, the detrimental effects of oil in a system, reasons for defrosting, as well as testing of the compressor discharge and suction valves.
