Class Preview
Step up your sock knitting and experiment with fun new stitch patterns as you make a colorful pair of socks alongside knitting author and designer Lucy Neatby. Discover how to choose coordinating sock yarn, create a decorative heel and switch between multiple stitch patterns. By the end of class, you’ll know so many new stitches, and have one-of-a-kind socks to show off.
Choosing Yarn & Needles
Meet Lucy Neatby and get started on your sock project with tips for choosing coordinating yarns. Then, learn how to create a swatch that fits your desired fabric density and measure gauge using a garter stitch band. Next, explore your needle options, from double-pointed to circular setups.
Starting Sideways: Garter Cuff
Discover how to start knitting sideways with a garter cuff. You’ll learn how to make the cuff with waste yarn and finish it with grafting. Lucy will then help you choose a pattern size and walk you through the included Fiesta Feet sock pattern.
Leg & Stitch Patterns
Learn how to work your socks by knitting from the cuff and darning the yarn tails from two different colors. Once you’ve got this technique down, move on to knitting the leg with two fun stitch patterns: shell bobbles and star stitch.
Patterned Heel Flap
Continue your sock with a unique patterned heel flap. You’ll see how to set up the flap and read the stitch pattern to keep your heel on track. Then, Lucy will guide you through the cabled pattern that forms the back of the heel.
Patterned Heel Turn & Foot
Knitting sturdy heels is a two-step process, and you’ll find out how to make the heel turn with reinforcement yarn. To ensure a comfortable fit, get tips for working the knit-up round and shaping. You’ll then be ready to create two stunning foot stitch patterns: checkerboard and flying swallows.
Patterned Toe & Finishing
Wrap up class with techniques to create a unique pattern in the toe shaping. Lucy will share her favorite way to close the toe: with a sock toe chimney that’s grafted shut. Finally, learn how to give your Fiesta Feet socks a beautiful finish with blocking techniques.
