What you’ll learn

  • Learn how to create a re-usable template for the scallop design.
  • Learn fully seamless pattern creation.
  • Learn methods for making changes after testing the pattern.
  • Learn a step-by-step method for making seamless scallop repeat patterns in Procreate.

I have taught you how to make seamless repeat patterns in Procreate before, but this is something new. I love making unusual patterns, and in my Adobe Illustrator classes I have taught how to create a scallop repeat pattern. This is a classic pattern type and once you break it down, it is not too difficult to accomplish. In this class, How to Produce a Repeat Scallop Pattern in Procreate, I plan to de-mystify the whole process.

In this class I’ll walk you through:

  • my step-by-step method for making seamless scallop repeat patterns in Procreate

  • how to create a re-usable template for the scallop design

  • my workflow for use of layers and other great features like snapping and vertical symmetry

  • fully seamless pattern creation

  • methods for making changes after testing the pattern

If you’ve been doing all the other repeat pattern classes, you’ll be able to go through all the steps. This class will benefit anyone who wishes to simplify creation of repeat patterns and wants variety in their Procreate patterns.

The key concepts I will include:

  • techniques using a circle to create the initial scallop

  • a look at the alignment and guides to help in the creation of a template

  • approaches you can take in designing ideal scallop patterns

This is an excellent skill for you to learn. Whether you are a fabric designer for sites like Spoonflower, or you create scrapbooking paper, cards, or whatever, this is a great option to learn about! Learning new Procreate workflows is always desirable. I guarantee you will create something really interesting, and once you have created a few of these repeats, you will see that it is now more difficult that producing a half-drop repeat.

Intro to How to Produce a Repeat Scallop Pattern in Procreate

This short intro will give you an overview of the class.

Lesson 1: Overview, Inspiration and Examples

In this lesson, I will give short history of the scallop repeat. I will show you a bunch of examples to help you think about what you might like to sketch out. I will start the design here. I will show you my ideas for sketching out the scallop.

Lesson 2: Creating the Scallop Template

In this lesson, I will break down the complete process of creating the template. With the steps I suggest, you will find it quite do-able. We will incorporate the sketch from the last lesson, and we will talk about the color palette.

Lesson 3: Painting the Reflected Flowers

In this lesson, I will explain the techniques I used for painting the flowers. I explain my choices and show you how to keep the illustration consistent. Refer to any reference you gathered at this stage.

Lesson 4: Painting the Leaves and Details

We will draw the leaves in this lesson. I will also teach you a very simple technique for adding detail to both the flowers and the leaves. Adding the details really helps you flesh out the design. I always find there is a first for everything and that it informs my choices for future designs in this style. You will learn very quickly what works and what doesn’t.

Lesson 5: Testing Out the Repeat

In this lesson, all the motifs will be finished. At this point, I will show you all the ins and outs of creating a perfect repeat of the pattern. There is much to discuss as we go through the process.

Lesson 6: Adjustments and Additional Details

This lesson will show you about adjustments and additional details. I take the time to “art direct” myself. This is the point at which you take a look at multiple repeats of the pattern and critique it. What can be done to improve your design? I show you the adjustments I make.

Lesson 7: Conclusion, Final Looks and Wrap Up

In this lesson we debrief, and I show you a few other designs and design choices. I show you my finished work on mock-ups so you can really visualize how all this translates by scale and color.

Concepts covered include but are not limited to Procreate scallop patterns, inking in Procreate, layering, Procreate canvas settings, Procreate snapping and guides, Procreate symmetry and drawing assist, color dynamics, the Brush Studio in Procreate, adjusting Procreate brushes, scallop repeat templates, sizing of documents and brushes, workflow best practices, the use of mock ups to test the patterns, painting best practice, Procreate composites, techniques with paints and blending, and much more.

Take the time to do a good sketch, referring to any reference you may have gathered. Paint the pattern on your new scallop template. Do a test to see if it works. Squint your eyes to see if something dominates and needs to be adjusted. Make final adjustments and then show what you have created on a mock-up.
