We’re throwing a block party and you’re invited! Follow along as professional quilting instructor Barb Eikmeier shares her secrets for quilting with pre-cut strips. Together you’ll make a variety of blocks using half-square triangles, curved piecing and appliqué, and you’ll even pick up a few tricks for using up scraps.
Squares & Rectangles
Meet Barb Eikmeier, who begins class by breaking down what makes pre-cut strips so special. You’ll learn some of the pros and cons of 2.5″ strips, before Barb shares considerations that ensure accuracy when working with them. Then dive right into making blocks with squares and rectangles.
Folded-Corner Triangles
Time to tackle triangles! Follow along with Barb as you turn your strips into folded-corner triangle units and find out how to use them in a variety of block styles. You’ll even get some innovative stashbusting ideas for using up your scraps!
Half-Square Triangles
Think you can’t use a 2.5-inch strip for a 2-inch half-square triangle? That’s because you haven’t seen Barb’s special method yet! Tackle this must-have, before taking a look at quick and easy block designs in which you can use your HSTs. The lesson ends with a fun maple leaf design!
Curves
When it comes to curves, Barb sets things straight. First, conquer two ways of accurately cutting curved pieces using freezer paper and template plastic. Then, build your confidence sewing curves with Barb’s pointers on pinning. The lesson ends with a pinwheel block and apple core block that both call for 2.5-inch strips!
Appliqué
Those 2.5-inch strips are perfect for appliqué too. Barb shows you why, using back-basting appliqué to create a classic flower design. Plus, use what you’ve learned to take your nine-patch and turn it into a honeybee block.
Frames
Bigger blocks? Bring them to life by creating frames from HSTs and folded-corner units. Then, learn to add frames for a perfect fit. You can even double things up by adding a second frame for a dynamic look and even larger blocks!
Scrap Solutions
Everyone loves a bonus! Barb shares inspiration for using all your leftover scraps, from borders and sashings to beautiful new blocks.
