Jack Bibbings and Matthew Hensby combine traditional craft with contemporary design to create original pieces that feel grounded and relevant. Together, at their workshop, they develop modern furniture pieces inspired by traditional English design. Their style is characterized by the hand tools they use, which gives a unique finish to each piece.

In this course, Jack and Matthew share their passion and expertise to show you how to start making your own wooden furniture. Discover how to use the hand tools you need, understand how wood is shaped, and craft your very own solid wood furniture piece that withstands the test of time.

Start the course by getting to know Jack Bibbings and Matthew Hensby and learning about their debuts in the woodworking industry. Explore the influences that have shaped their style and techniques, and begin to do some research for your own influences.

Jack then goes over the tools for the course and shares some advice on buying your own. Learn what to look for in a workbench for hand tools and begin preparing your workspace. Get introduced to the hand plane, seeing how to correctly set up and hold it. Then, learn about the spokeshave and chisel, seeing their different uses for woodworking. Look at the different tools your teachers use to sharpen blades and learn to use them. Then, see what to consider when selecting and preparing timber.

Get an overview of the stool you are about to make and see your design plans. Prepare and dimension the components you need and start drilling and shaping your timber pieces. Create your wedges and assemble your stool.

Add the finishing touches to your stool, such as flushing tenons, adding final chamfers, and applying oils or paints. Finish the course by seeing how to sign your work.
