Tufting for Beginners: Design Colorful Textile Art
Learn to use a tufting gun to create a handmade tapestry filled with shapes and colors from scratch
Are you ready to step into Zeyu Cheng’s creative universe full of color and fluffy textures? This quirky textile artist uses wool and a tufting gun to experiment and embrace her youthful curiosity. Inspired by the psychedelic art of the 70s, she designs pieces with free forms, bright colors, and original motifs.
In this online course, she teaches you step by step how to work with the tools, materials, and techniques needed to make your own tufted tapestry. Zeyu shows you her design process from start to finish so that, by the end of the course, you’ll be able to turn your multicolored ideas into practical and decorative works of art!
Start the course by meeting your teacher, Zeyu Cheng, who talks to you in detail about her background. She also shows you some of her aesthetic influences and the artists that inspire her.
Next, Zeyu explains what tools and materials she uses for tufting and introduces you to the essential techniques you need to make your tapestry. Once you’ve got the basics, prepare your workspace and make a simple frame for your project.
Time to design your own tapestry! Zeyu teaches you how to gather inspiration and choose the color palette and materials, as well as different methods for sketching your piece.
When your sketch is ready, transfer it to the screen and begin the production process. Tuft the outlines and each of the shapes separately before finishing off the back of the tapestry and trimming the front with a shear.
