Learning to play the drums should be fun, and there is no reason to be overwhelmed with information and rules from the very beginning when all you want to do is play. That’s why I have created this course. You’ll be playing the drums within minutes, and tracking your progress straight away.
This beginner’s guide focuses on 7 Essential Grooves that are used all the time in drumming and are universal to any style you want to play. In learning these grooves you will develop three way coordination and acquire simple practice techniques you can use to learn more advanced grooves in the future. Some of these concepts may look easy on paper, but putting them all together in real time is a challenge that requires many hours of repetitive practice. However, there is no reason this should be done in a boring and monotonous way. That’s why all of the exercises in this course are to be played with backing tracks that have been especially written so you can experience how these grooves will be used in your drumming from the very beginning.
Throughout this course you will learn the role of the drummer in music making and how your parts will fit with other musicians in a band. These concepts are often overlooked by beginners who often struggle to play their parts with other musicians or are unable to play in time with backing tracks.
In this course you will learn how to:
Coordinate bass drum, snare drum and hi-hats parts independently and together
Hear bass drum patterns against a “back beat” on the snare
Use “heel up” and “heel down” techniques to play the bass drum
Play the first 7 grooves that are the foundation to all drum kit playing
Understand how these grooves relate to each other and how to manipulate them with techniques such as displacement, delay and anticipation
How to play in time with a click track or backing track
How to practice effectively and track your progress
Insider methods for practicing exercises up to speed straight away
Included are 8 songs divided into 4 different speeds (32 tracks in total), providing a fun, musical way to track your progress. In addition there are 7 “stomps and claps” tracks, and 40+ isolated drum tracks demonstrating all of the exercises in this course. All videos have music notation graphics displayed on screen, and there is a 16-page PDF booklet to accompany the course.
Once you have completed this course you will have a solid foundation to your groove playing and be in a position to learn more advanced grooves, and of course create your own.
I’ve been teaching the drums for over 10 years, and taken 100’s of students through their first steps in making music. This course concentrates on the issues they wanted to know, when they needed to know it, and is the result of years of demonstrating and explaining these concepts in the most easily understandable and actionable way I’ve found possible.
