The course focuses on the nature acids and bases in aqueous solutions. We first cover the definitions of acids and bases in aqueous solutions. We will then discuss various polyprotic acids and how to identify them. Using chemical equations, we will define the difference between strong and weak acids/bases. We will identify conjugate acid/base pairs in chemical equations as well as autoionization. We will derive equilibrium constants for weak acids and bases and discuss the mathematical nature of the pH/pOH scales. Calculations start with simple determination of pH, pOH and concentrations of hydronium and hydroxide ions. We will them move onto calculations with strong acids and bases in aqueous solution, including calculating how many grams must be dissolved in a set amount of solution to give a specific pH. After a good understanding of strong acids and bases is established, we will work with weak acids and bases in equilibrium. We will learn how to construct and use an ICE (initial, consumed, equilibrium) table to determine the pH of a weak acid or base. Finally, we will calculate the final pH of weak polyprotic acid solutions using multiple ICE tables and equilibrium constants. We will not cover neutralization reactions in this course.
