Lean aims at creating value by relentlessly eliminating waste, and Six Sigma at eliminating variation from processes. This course introduces both, weighted heavily toward Lean, through the principles and tools behind modern productivity approaches in aerospace, automotive, health care and other sectors. Topics include value stream mapping, lean supply chains and engineering, A3 thinking and quality tools, with a physical simulation of an aircraft manufacturing enterprise or a clinic.

What You Will Achieve

  • Apply Lean thinking to identify value and waste in a process
  • Draw a value stream map for an existing process
  • Use A3 thinking and basic quality tools for continuous process improvement
  • Explain the basics of Six Sigma and how variability affects a process

Job Outlook

The material prepares people for participation in lean improvement projects and process improvement in organizations in many fields.

Our take

Good for: Newcomers to process improvement, in manufacturing or healthcare, who want clear videos and slides on Lean.

Keep in mind: Half the contact hours were hands-on exercises and simulations, most not published here. Coverage is compared with a Bronze Lean level, but this page awards no certification.

Bottom line: A generous, well-tested introduction to Lean, with a useful healthcare track alongside the enterprise one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this give me a Lean certification?

No. Instructors describe coverage as roughly equivalent to the Bronze level Lean Certification of the SME, AME, Shingo Institute and ASQ, which are separate, and the page offers materials only.

What is the difference between the two Day 2 tracks?

One simulates an aircraft manufacturing enterprise with lean supply chain and engineering basics. The other simulates a clinic with continuous process improvement and improving the enterprise.

Are all videos from the same year?

No. The plant tour and enterprise session videos are from 2008, one talk on Rockwell Collins was recorded in 2006, and the other videos are from the 2012 class.
