Animated Frame by Frame Illustrations
Learn to bring your illustrations to life frame by frame with Photoshop, Procreate, and After Effects
Animation allows you to capture moments and recreate them with a touch of imagination. For illustrator and animator Catalina Vásquez, better known as Kathiuska, it’s her favorite form of expression for depicting thoughts, personal stories, and scenes from daily life, which are recurring themes in her work. She has collaborated with big-name clients such as Snapchat, Pepsi, Procter & Gamble, Amnesty International, and the Medellín Museum of Modern Art.
In this online course, Catalina teaches you step by step how to bring your illustrations to life through layered animation, from the concept to the final looped scene. Learn the fundamentals of this technique, how to animate freehand titles in Photoshop and Procreate, and give your piece a professional look with After Effects.
Meet Catalina Vásquez, animator, illustrator, and your teacher for the course. She tells you about her creative background and her biggest influences before giving you an overview of the course content.
Begin by brainstorming ideas for your project and create a mind map with keywords to spark your imagination. Once you’ve landed on a concept, put together a mood board with visual references and learn some composition techniques to shape your idea into a sketch.
Next, Catalina gives you an introduction to frame-by-frame animation, explaining the illusion of movement, frames per second, and the difference between linear and loop animation.
Move on to the planning stage and make a storyboard, defining the key moments in your loop, along with your character’s actions and the background. Then, see how to build a color palette in Photoshop and Procreate and apply it to your design using the brush that best matches your style.
