What you’ll learn

  • Learn to create your own figurines and action figures in this wide array of projects.
  • Learn the basics of working with polymer clay and using an understructure to create your projects.
  • Sculpting is actually an acquired skill, not necessarily a talent. Practice does indeed make perfect-ish.
  • This is more fun than drawing (and I do both!)

This course is intended to be a broad sampler of various sculpting projects.  We know these may not all be your cup of tea, but if there’s one or two that tickle your creative toes, then we hope you’ll join us on this amazing art adventure!

Students will learn to sculpt using an understructure (typically foil) and then build the core shape followed by adding details.

Projects include:

• Sisu (from Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon)

• R2-D2 (Star Wars)

• Psyduck (Pokemon)

• Flareon (Pokemon)

• Panda Bear

• Zombie (from Plants vs. Zombies)

• Apple Blossom (Shopkins)

• Ginny Weasley Wand (Harry Potter)

• and a bonus drawing video: Mama and Baby Koalas

How to sculpt (basic, easy to follow, step-by-step instructions)

1. Use something as a base. Aluminum foil is great for shaping and giving a lightweight understructure. Also, it could be a stick or rod like for things like Harry Potter wands or sword replicas.

2. Cover the foil (or whatever you are using as an understructure) with your base color clay.

3. Build up any areas that need a little more shaping not provided by the understructure or clay base coat (like the shape of bulging out cheeks, or a fat belly)

3. Add the extra elements that give it the final details such as the ears, paws, claws, intricate detail, etc.

5. Lastly, add texture as needed. If sculpting hair or fur put cut marks or lines flowing in the proper direction. Sometimes it’s cutting simple lines or putting small dents throughout (like Dumbledore’s wand).

BAKING INSTRUCTIONS: Bake at 275˚ for 15 minutes.

Who this course is for:

  • Projects are generally geared towards ages 5-12 but there are certainly projects for any age (like the Harry Potter wands.)
  • If you love to create things, this is for you!
