Learn to design and handmake your own custom, leather sandals from scratch

Add your review

What would you say to designing your next pair of summer sandals? In this online course, learn not only how to think up a design but also make them alongside Lilday founder Marta Grau. Explore the steps of this footwear designer’s slow-fashion philosophy, based on responsible manufacture of individual pieces made to order.

Throughout the course, familiarize yourself with Marta’s creative process to make your own pair of leather sandals complete with straps, a heel piece, and a main body. Study the anatomy of the foot as well as the different parts of a shoe and the materials needed. Discover how to create a design without using a shoe tree and then cut out and assemble your shoe.

Begin the course by getting to know Marta as she talks about how she got started in shoemaking. She also shares some of the influences that inspire her designs.

Then dive right in with the preparations for your project—a pair of leather sandals. Start by exploring the different materials and take an in-depth look at the anatomy of the foot and the different shoe trees available.

Next, learn how to take measurements and start developing the sketch of your design, before creating the patterns for your sandal and transferring them to the leather to make the individual pieces.

Time to get to work! After cutting the pieces and putting together the template, mark where the straps go and attach each part. Now add the sole you like and look at some decorative options.
