Artistic Techniques for Illustrating Nature
Create organic, delicate, and balanced compositions by playing with different techniques like watercolor, gouache, and acrylic
If nature is your main source of inspiration, this online course by botanical illustrator Cristina Cilloniz will help you experiment and take your organic compositions one step further.
Throughout the units, you will discover how to combine watercolor with other options and learn to mix techniques to create unique naturalistic illustrations. To continue exploring naturalistic drawing, you can practice with Cristina’s previous courses: Negative watercolor techniques for botanical illustration and Naturalistic drawing and composition in watercolor .
To begin with, Cristina Cilloniz will share with you a sample of her portfolio, as well as her professional career since she began in the world of illustration. He will also tell you about his influences and the artistic references that have marked his work.
Next, you will know the materials that you will use. First, you will discover their characteristics and how each one of them behaves through practical exercises and then give them an interpretation and a unique language.
In the third unit, you will focus on the first of your three projects. So your teacher will guide you step by step through the process of creating an orchid and bromeliad illustration using watercolor, colored pencils and gouache.
Then, it will be the turn of the fruity composition of oranges and raspberries with watercolor and Indian ink. You will paint the first layers of the illustration in watercolor and continue to generate volume with shadows.
