Carving a Gnome with Flat Chisels – Wood Carving
Learn the art of wood carving and create your own gnome with this beginner-friendly course. Discover techniques for smooth cuts, chisel holds, and avoiding mistakes. Perfect for beginners and woodworkers looking to expand their skills. Have fun, embrace mistakes, and walk away with a sense of accomplishment.
What you’ll learn
- Learn about grain direction in wood and how to avoid splitting it
- Techniques for holding chisels and creating smooth cuts
- Different chisel cuts and what they can do for your wood carving
- Create a Gnome with a single piece of wood
We’re gonna create a little gnome in this class; perfect to sit on your desk, on your windowsill or even out in the garden left to age gracefully with it’s surroundings. Going back hundreds of years gnomes were thought to live underground and be excellent diggers and also very shy around people (which is why we never see them of course!)
In this class you’ll learn :
Basic layout of a simple gnome and design considerations
Carving a shape outline without using a saw
Creating the hat/nose/beard/moustache and boot shapes
Different ways to hold the chisel and achieve different cuts
Ways to avoid mistakes when carving (though they still happen!)
This class is great for complete beginners to wood carving but also woodworkers who are looking to expand their skills and use their chisels in a slightly different way for a change. You could also begin to create gnomes to sell or give away as presents, and eventually use the skills learned in this class in addition to my other classes to create designs of your own.
Most of all I hope you just have fun and enjoy the class, roll with the mistakes and walk away with a sense of accomplishment.
Check the resources for some sample gnome templates if you need them.
