Creating Animated Patterns from Ink Sketches
Make patterns move with a bright, colorful, and natural touch using Photoshop, After Effects, and ink-painted graphics
Have you ever wanted to create mesmerizing animated loops? Join illustrator and director Alice Saey and learn to make ink sketches come to life. Discover how to make a pattern move around with Photoshop and After Effects, using drawings made with India ink and Ecoline.
By the end of this comprehensive online course, you’ll have mastered every step of the animation process, from storyboarding to creating an animatic and debuting your work on social media. Get ready to use your imagination to create a magical animated universe from things you see every day!
Alice Saey begins by introducing herself and discussing her sources of inspiration, including paintings and experimental cinema. With many award-winning films to her credit, this is a rich experience she can pass on to you.
After learning about the course material, create a mood board and get down to work in pencil and ink. Feel free to draw inspiration from everything around you. Add color to your sketch, this time with Ecoline ink, to get an initial, constructive result.
Next, move on to pre-production. Import your research into Photoshop and use it to develop the storyboard for your animated loop. Make an animatic in After Effects to get an overall idea of the flow and timing of your animation, working with the animated components created in Photoshop.
Assemble it all into the final scene in After Effects and fine-tune the pacing, staging, and colors. This is known as the “composing” stage. Finally, add some music and export your pattern to share on Instagram.
