Planning & Design Options

Meet designer Laurie Medford and learn more about the custom bedskirts you’ll make in your class. Laurie explains how to measure your bed and choose the right fabric for your project, whether it’s a gathered, flat or box-pleated bedskirt.

Gathered Bedskirt

You can make a bedskirt with full or partial gathers easily with Laurie’s guidance. Learn how to calculate the amount of fabric you’ll need and match pattern repeats. Laurie shows how to gather large amounts of fabric evenly with stitching or gathering tape. This skirt can be attached to the bed with quick-to-sew installation bands — no need to remove the mattress!

Flat Bedskirt With Kick Pleats

For a more tailored look, consider a flat bedskirt with kick pleats at the corners. Laurie shows how to railroad your fabric so each panel can be made without seams. You also can choose to add pleats in the middle of your side panels for a decorative touch. This bedskirt is fully lined and designed to be attached to the bed with decking that lies under the mattress.

Box Pleat Bedskirt

Box pleats add a sophisticated touch to your bedskirt, especially if you use contrasting fabric inside the pleats and fold back the edges for a tuxedo effect. Laurie shows you how to calculate the yardage you’ll need and how to sew your bedskirt, which you’ll later attach to decking.

Basic Decking

Create decking for a bedskirt that is fully anchored between mattress and box spring. Learn how to calculate your yardage and add banding in a fashion fabric, then curve and miter the corners. Laurie demonstrates how to attach the flat bedskirt with kick pleats to the decking.

Decking With Welt Cord

Add a designer touch to the edge of your decking with welt cord. Make your own with Laurie’s guidance, attach it to the decking, then see how the box pleat bedskirt is attached to the decking. If you find your measurements are off a little, Laurie has some tips for finessing the fit.

Installation Bands

Installation bands make it easy to attach and remove a gathered bedskirt, since you don’t need to lift the entire mattress. Get Laurie’s tips for attaching the band to the gathered bedskirt, reducing the bulk of the gathers inside the band and, finally, attaching the bedskirt to your bed with ease!
