Cut and Sew a Jacket from Start to Finish
Create a worker-style jacket step by step using a unisex pattern and express your unique style
Want to make your own jacket from start to finish? Learn all the steps alongside Sandra and Urko, founders and designers of Lantoki, a space in downtown Barcelona that acts as both a store and workshop where they design and sell clothing, patterns, and accessories.
In their previous courses they taught you to make a dress shirt in Dressmaking: Design Your Own Dress Shirt and to explore patterns in Pattern Making Techniques for Recreating Your Favorite Garments. In their third online course, they walk you through all the stages of making a unisex worker jacket complete with a collar and front facing.
As an introduction to the course, get to know a little bit about Sandra and Urko, founders and designers of the fashion studio Lantoki. They talk briefly about their journeys through the world of fashion and their everyday sources of inspiration.
Start by familiarizing yourself with all the characteristics of a worker jacket, which you make for your final project, such as linings, topstitching, and the ideal fabrics and materials for this type of garment.
After downloading and printing your patterns, take measurements to gauge the size and calculate how much material you need. Three, two, one, let’s get cutting! Learn how to place the pattern on the fabric and cut it out as well as attach the interlining before starting to sew.
Next, discover how to sew the edges on the bias with topstitching, then assemble the whole body of the jacket and add the pockets, back, shoulders, and sleeves.
