Dark Fantasy Character Design in ZBrush
Learn to bring industry-quality fantasy characters to life in 3D, from the first sketch to the final image
Want to learn to make scriptwriters’ ideas a reality? In this online course, concept artist Santiago Betancur teaches you to design and sculpt all manner of creatures, taking into account their physical characteristics as well as their backstory.
For Santiago, ZBrush completely changed his artistic vision and made his creative process much more agile, quickly becoming his tool of choice. Throughout the course, he guides you step by step in the creation of fantastical characters in ZBrush while teaching one of the most important lessons of all: that simple and well-done is what makes the biggest impact.
Meet your teacher, Santiago Betancur, who talks about how he got his start in the industry, his career path, and how he ended up becoming a concept artist. He also talks about some of the professionals that have shaped his style.
Create a profile for your character that includes their most important elements and features, such as armor or an outfit. Then collect references and move onto the exploration phase to spark interesting ideas.
Now it’s time to work on your final design. Begin with the general blocking—the anatomical foundation— and create any props, armor, and clothing to fill them out.
Next, refine your character and add intricate details like pores, wrinkles, and superficial damage before discovering how to apply color and texture to your protagonist.
