Introduction & Block One
Meet quilter Tiffany Hayes and learn about the inspiration behind the Asteria quilt you’ll be making. Tiffany shares strategies for selecting four fabrics that have the right amount of contrast for the design. Then dive right into making the first block, with tips for accurate cutting, sewing and pressing along the way. You’ll also see some design variations for quilts that use the first block alone. Each of the following blocks can also be made into one of the bonus quilts.
Block Two
Tiffany introduces the Goddess tool, a template she designed to assist you in the making of the Asteria quilt. It combines several other common quilting tools. You can make your own with the included pattern, then use it for cutting the squares and half-square triangles that make up Block Two, a double-diamond block.
Blocks Three & Four
Start working on Block Three by creating tall triangles and half-tall triangles with Tiffany’s guidance. If you’re using a patterned fabric, you’ll learn how to cut it so that the right side is always showing when you assemble your block. Then use the same patches to create Block Four, a stunning star block.
Blocks Five & Six
Learn how to make the dynamic Block Five, pieced with half-square triangles, and create dramatic movement in your quilt. Learn Tiffany’s tricks for getting your points to match up perfectly. Block Six is another star block, but quite different from the one you learned in Lesson 3. Tiffany shows how to make it and discusses several fun quilt layout variations based on this block alone.
Block Seven & Additional Shapes
The corner cut-away portion of Tiffany’s Goddess tool makes Block Seven a breeze to piece. Tiffany guides you through the process and shows some fun variations you can try. Then, learn a little more about the versatility of the Goddess tool and the many shapes you can cut with it as you work on other quilts.
Block Eight & Additional Layouts
Block Eight of the Asteria quilt is unusual, incorporating corner cut-aways and 5″ half-square triangles, but it’s not difficult to make when you follow along with Tiffany. You’ll see some quilts you can make using different arrangements of this block. Then see what you can do with two or more of the blocks that make up Asteria.
Finishing
With all of your Asteria blocks assembled, it’s time to make your quilt! Learn from Tiffany’s experience as you carefully lay out your blocks and sew them together, then bind your quilt with or without a border. Tiffany shares tips on choosing border and backing fabric, and what to consider if you opt for professional quilting on your gorgeous Asteria quilt!
