Free Tutorial – Politicising the Personal

This course is brought to you by One Future Collective. One Future Collective is a feminist social purpose organisation with a vision of a world built on social justice, led by communities of care. We fight for the right of each person to live a life of safety, dignity and belongingness by catalysing people-power and building just institutions.

This course aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the intricate dynamics between personal, social, and group identities, power, and privilege within society. Through a multifaceted exploration, participants will explore how political structures and power dynamics shape their intersecting identities. Central to this exploration is an engagement with the historical evolution of the term ‘personal is political’, offering insights into its significance in understanding the interconnectedness of personal experiences and broader socio-political contexts.

Moreover, participants will be encouraged to embark on self-discovery and reflection, identifying and cultivating their political beliefs and values. This process entails active learning, attentive listening, continuous reflection, and integrating sustainable practices into daily life. Additionally, the course will explore anti-oppressive practices in structural frameworks and everyday interactions. Participants will be equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to challenge oppressive systems and promote equity, fostering a commitment to social justice and inclusivity in both personal and collective spheres. Through these objectives, the course endeavours to empower participants to become agents of positive change within their communities.

The key learning outcomes of the course are as follows: 

• Learn about personal, social, group identities, power and privilege.

• Identify how their intersecting identities are linked to power and politics.

• Engage with the history of the term ‘personal is political’.

• Reflect on finding one’s own politics – learning, listening, reflecting, and practising it sustainably day-to-day

• Explore anti-oppressive practice in structural approaches and everyday interactions.
