Class Preview

You may have seen bias tape used as an artistic accent, but in this class it’s more than just a focal point; it’s the star of the show! Learn all about bias-tape appliqué from Latifah Saafir, one of the modern quilting movement’s most innovative designers. Latifah will guide you through two fresh quilt designs. Plus, get tips for perfect topstitching, creative colorways and a chunky binding method.

Bias-Tape Appliqué Basics

Latifah begins by showing you how to cut fabric into bias strips, join them together and trim them. You’ll use your iron and a bias tape maker to create perfectly folded strips that are ready to appliqué to a background fabric or block.

Making a Practice Block

Learn how to set up your machine (including presser foot and stitch length) for pro topstitching, then apply bias strips to fabric. Get Latifah’s tips for using straight-stitch-only machines. Afterwards, put it all together in a practice block.

The Modern Double Wedding Ring Quilt

Latifah puts a fresh spin on traditional double wedding ring quilts with her easy minimalist design. See how to choose colors, transfer the design, stitch the bias-tape curves and add optional fabric inserts to start your quilt.

Completing the Modern DWR Quilt

Complete your double wedding ring quilt by neatly joining blocks for perfectly aligned motifs. After that, Latifah reveals her trademark method for chunky binding.

Beginning the Rainbow Quilt

Start the rainbow quilt by creating the whole-cloth background. Learn how to join bias-tape strips for each arc of color and transfer the pattern lines using a DIY compass made from poster board.

Completing the Rainbow Quilt

After all of your strips are ready to go, topstitch the arcs to the background. Latifah goes over some quilting options to help you finish your rainbow throw. She also demonstrates using bias tape appliqué for improv quilts and adding a 90-degree angled turn in your bias tape.
