Introduction & Overview
Meet your instructor, artist Joseph Dolderer, and learn how you’ll explore color and planes over the course of this class.
Preparing for the Single Block Study
Prepare for your first study, which consists of a single block against a solid-colored background. You’ll learn how to lay in elements as you create a grisaille to set the stage for your color work.
The Single Block Study
Discover new ways to identify and adjust color as Dolderer walks you through ways to lay in each hue efficiently, work with cast shadows, add a second color cycle and work with temperature changes.
Multiple Block Study, Part One
Add more blocks to increase the complexity of your studies as you develop each block and the background, working with anchor points and various planes as you go.
Multiple Block Study, Part Two
Continue the study you started in the prior lesson as Dolderer walks you through troubleshooting tips and best practices for identifying more complexity in various planes, values and hues.
Round Object Study, Part One
Once you’ve gained the skills to work with multiple blocks, you’re ready to start tackling the challenge of round objects. Dolderer walks you through specific considerations to take into account when creating the grisaille and early color cycles, continuing to challenge your eye as you examine color in new ways.
Round Object Study, Part Two
Continue your round object study with an in-depth look at planar relationships, developing your eye to identify subtle, sculptural elements in your work. You’ll add highlights and final transitions before learning when a piece is “done.”
Taking the Studies Further
In the conclusion of this class, Dolderer applies the color and value studies you’ve developed to complex dimensional studies such as everyday objects and the human form. You’ll examine the play of color, value and light in portraits and consider how to continue developing your new-found skills in future works.
