Portrait Painting with Oil: Explore Light and Shade
Experiment with light, color, composition, and mark-making to illustrate the features and expressions of a subject in a way that captures their story
“I am drawn to people’s faces—their expressions, the moods they convey, or the feelings they evoke.”
To capture them, award-winning artist Jane French specializes in oil portraits. As well as working on commissions, she teaches at various institutions and exhibits her work in galleries. She was also selected to appear in Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year.
Begin the course by getting to know painter Jane French. Discover how she turned her childhood love for art into a full-time career, along with the influences that inspire her and the work she creates.
Dive into the materials needed for the course. Then learn how to mix and apply oil paint, and see how different brushes can be used to achieve different effects. Experiment with color mixing and tonal values to paint a monochrome object before moving on to a subject in full color.
Choose a reference photo for your final illustration and prepare your surface for painting. Pre-mix colors for your subject’s skin tone and paint the background. Then block in the mid-tones and light values of the face. Finally, add any finishing touches to your portrait.
Hear how to improve your creative practice by developing a series. To wrap up the course, Jane talks you through her advice for promoting yourself and your work.
