This free online course covers the world?s main sources of energy. We examine the wide range of units of measurement used to estimate how much energy we currently consume and the often-catastrophic impact that it can have on the environment. The course compares ?renewable? and ?clean? energy to investigate the use of such technologies to protect the planet. Finally, we consider the complicating factor of poverty in the energy debate.

  • Energy Used and CO2 Released to The Atmosphere

In this module, you will be introduced to the different forms of energy and energy sources. This will include the wide range of energy units used in the world and an estimate of how much energy we are currently using. You will study the impact that energy usage has on the atmosphere. You will learn how to calculate a person’s impact on the atmosphere according to the energy they use. Finally, you will learn about the impact energy usage has on the temperature profile of the planet.

    Sources of Energy

In this module, you will be introduced to the prevalence of conventional sources of energy and how much the world is depending on these sources of energy. You will learn about the use of nuclear energy and discuss whether there is or not a clean energy source. You will learn how industrial and commercial activity is often very closely related to energy consumption. You will learn about renewable energy and clean energy, compare them and find common ground between them.

    Access and Energy Consumption

In this module, you will be introduced to the landscape of hydropower energy systems. This will include the disadvantages of large stations and their effects on community settlements and environmental destruction. Then, you will study the usage of energy across nations, sectors and populations and the factors related to it. Finally, you will learn about poverty in the context of having sufficient access to energy.

Energy Use and Its Consequences for Development

In this module, you will be introduced to the details of the use of energy in each sector. This will include the usage pattern and how much of an impact is it likely to make. You will learn about personal energy usage and how a person can become more environmentally conscious. You will study the link between energy usage and GDP development. Then you will study the temperature anomalies that are affecting the temperature of land and ocean as well and the factors associated with it.
