I am writing this blog to reach out to other language learners who connect with the use of entertainment-based role-playing and conversational style study.
I have always liked watching Spanish novelas and my experience watching them has greatly influenced my teaching and language learning mentality.
It started with the series “Sin Senos No Hay Paraiso”. Lol. It is not for everyone, but at that time in my life, it really caught my attention. Somehow, made it through 100 episodes! Yes, I was addicted. The benefit for me, though, was that I started to really grasp the language because I was using subtitles in the target language (Spanish).
One of my recent supervisors at a multilingual school for children quite often brought books, books, and more books to our classrooms even though we often didn’t have space for them. However, I eventually began to understand how important reading is for the process of language learning. It is a great way to pick up vocabulary, grammar, and culture in a simple format. Mixing those benefits with live visuals and audio that provides the correct pronunciation is a sure-fire way to improve one’s language acquisition.
I have always heard the idea that comedy is the highest form of intelligence, and to understand comedy in a foreign language show requires a deep level of comprehension. This is often because of the nuances, expressions, and inside jokes that come with truly understanding a language. Yet, for me, comedy is something that many people enjoy, regardless of their educational background. So that idea of presenting foreign language students not only with content they can understand, but also with material that is funny and engaging started to take over my mind.
I began to think of different ways to create stories…whether they were for stand-up comedy, television shows, or a comic book. I kept writing and sharing my stories with my ESL students to see what they thought and many of them liked the stories a lot. As I kept learning the craft of language teaching and I refined my skills, I continued to improve upon my work, and I created my first textbook – the English Dialogue Class Textbook (1).
Some of these stories are skits or funny short stories that I plan to film in the future, but I did the labor of taking out of each story easy lessons that could help an English Language Learner use benefit immediately in real life situations. Of course, my main goal with the stories is to ENTERTAIN students. There are tons and tons of educational centers that promise the goal of learning a language quickly, but I have seen far too many hopeful students lose their interest in the typical classroom. Obviously, there are several different reasons why a student may drop out of a language school, but my desire was to create a fun, new way of practicing language. Essentially, it was to allow students to “star” in their own “novelas” – but with the focus on really practicing language they can use in the street with friends or at work and in business.
Because I am at the beginning of my production career, I want to give away this English Dialogue Class Textbook (1) so that you can try it out risk-free, and hopefully get from it as much as possible. It has over 10 different, hilarious stories where characters participate in conversations that lead to funny situations, yet the language is very purposeful and useful for advanced beginners and high-intermediate English students. There are some advanced concepts as well, but many of the lessons are catered to these aforementioned students.
Now for those students that are ready to learn a bit more and want to listen to the stories being enacted, please buy English Dialogue course. That way you can experience my interpretation of the stories as well as the experience of having class with me. If you would like to join private class with me or small-group classes, please email me at ktn@alumni.duke.edu.
